Ameba perteneciente a los protozoos que se denominan de "vida libre" puesto que son capaces de sobrevivir y replicarse en el medio ambiente sin necesitar un hospedador. Se han reconocido cuatro géneros capaces de producir enfermedad humana: Naegleria, Sappinia, Balamuthia y Acanthamoeba. Pueden ser productoras de infecciones que no son frecuentes pero que pueden producir enfermedad severa, principalmente con afectación del sistema nervioso central (SNC).
