 Enfermedad infecciosa crónica generalizada del hombre, producida por Mycobacterium leprae y caracterizada por lesiones granulomatosas específicas en la piel, mucosa, nervios, hueso y vísceras. La forma de presentación de la enfermedad depende del grado de respuesta inmune al bacilo. En las personas con mayor grado de inmunidad contra el bacilo se producen lesiones con gran componente de respuesta granulomatosa tisular y mínimo número de bacilos (lepra tuberculoide).
<(F.): Lèpre: est une maladie infectieuse chronique, causée par la bactérie Mycobacterium leprae, qui affecte la peau et les nerfs. Si elle n’est pas traitée, elle peut entraîner des dommages progressifs et irréversibles des nerfs, une perte de sensation et une transpiration au niveau des extrémités. Elle peut paralyser les muscles des mains, des pieds et du visage. <(In.): Leprosy: a cutaneous disease which first appears as blebs or as reddish, shining, slightly prominent spots, with spreading edges. These are often followed by an eruption of dark or yellowish prominent nodules, frequently producing great deformity. In one variety of the disease, anæsthesia of the skin is a prominent symptom. In addition there may be wasting of the muscles, falling out of the hair and nails, and distortion of the hands and feet with destruction of the bones and joints.
