Consiste en una inflamación del revestimiento de los intestinos, causándoles enrojecimiento, irritación y sangrado. Generalmente, esto ocurre en el revestimiento interno del colon y del íleo. Ocasionalmente, lse encuentra en el revestimiento de la boca, esófago o estómago. Sí la enfermedad no es controlada, pueden aparecer desgarros, úlceras o perforaciones intestinales. Fué descrita por Bernard Crohn, médico americano (1884–1983).
