Defecto neuromuscular del esófago que produce una alteración de su peristalsis con incapacidad del esfínter inferior para abrirse al iniciarse la deglución. Puede estar causada por una denervación vagal a nivel central, o por una lesión periférica a nivel terminal.

   Sinónimos: cardioespasmo, megaesófago.

   <((F): Achalasie: pathologie dans laquelle les muscles de la paroi oesophagienne ainsi que le sphincter situé entre l'oesophage et l'estomac ne se relâchent pas après la déglutition, ce qui empêche les aliments de pénétrer dans l'estomac.

   <(Ing): Achalasia: constriction of the lower portion of the food pipe, oesophagus, due to inability of the sphincter muscles to relax. Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, vomiting and heartburn. Treatment includes oesophageal dilation using special instruments or medications, for example nitroglycerin, calcium channel blockers, etc.
