Colección de pus situada entre las hojas de la aponeurosis cervical profunda, que forman el espacio prevertebral. Se puede extender en altura desde la base del cráneo al mediastino posterior, hasta el nivel de la bifurcación de la tráquea. Por su conexión con el espacio pretraqueal las infecciones retrofaríngeas pueden diseminarse al mediastino anterior directamente o por necrosis de los ganglios mediastínicos.
<(F): Abcès rétropharyngé, abcès rétropharyngien: est une collection de pus située en arrière de la paroi de la gorge, ou si l'on préfère en arrière du pharynx.
