MENINGITIS

   Inflamación de las meninges, especialmente de la aracnoides y de la piamadre. El término incluye un conjunto de afecciones patológicas de diversa etiología, entre las que destaca en primer lugar la meningitis cerebroespinal epidémica provocada por el meningococo, que penetra en el organismo a través de las vías aéreas superiores. la enfermedad aparece de manera aguda con fiebre, vómitos, cefalea, rigidez en el cuello, convulsiones, alteraciones psíquicas y delirio pudiendo afectar en todas las edades, pero sobre todo a niños. con tratamiento adecuado se suele curar aunque en un porcentaje variable; según el tipo de agente infeccioso, pueden quedar secuelas neurológicas como sordera, déficit mental o motor, etc.
